Simultaneous Goings-on

One of the reasons for the success of the MM movement is that it is not ONLY something you can do to be healthier and it is not ONLY better for the environment and doesn't ONLY help reduce animal suffering. It is all three things in one change which doesn't have to be all or nothing--it is an improvement by degree that feels achievable for most people. One day a week, give up the meat... easy.



So, last week I presented the "Math on Meat" as an illustration of the evidence showing that a reduction in meat consumption equates to an improvement in your overall health. And while I was preparing my equations, Rosie O'Donnell was recovering from a major heart attack with a scary name: "The Widowmaker." In the aftermath of her surgery and ongoing recovery, Rosie found her way to the documentary "Forks Over Knives" and a consultation with Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr. (a cardiologist featured in the doc and also on my page of great docs). 


As has happened with so many others who have seen the film, Rosie made a decision to get serious about her health by adopting a plant-based diet. She has been very happy with her results so far, tweeting pictures of many of her meals as well as her surprise at having lost a quick 10 pounds. We here at MRM World Headquarters wish Rosie the best of luck and health, as well as much happiness in her new marriageA bonne santé.

And while Rosie was discovering some great new plant-based meals, leading water scientists were warning "that the world's population may have to switch almost completely to a vegetarian diet over the next 40 years to avoid catastrophic shortages." The amount of water required to bring meat to the table is astonishing, especially compared with plant-based foods, and this will become a more critical issue as the growing world population keeps putting pressure on our finite supplies of fresh water. This idea of a vegetarian world seemed to strike a chord with the media, and the story was widely reported. Even the not-usually-so-veg-friendly "Field and Stream" magazine felt they had to weigh in (thanks to loyal reader MKM for this link).

Bottom line, it looks like we'll all have to become vegetarians by 2050 to save the world. This after the previous warnings by the UN (which I have previously reported on), that we needed to cut our meat consumption by 50% before 2050 in order to prevent runaway problems related to climate change. These latest reports have upped the ante again. But can you feel the synchronicity in all this? Many problems pointing to the same solution. Simultaneous, unrelated goings-on tending in the same direction. 15% reduction in the short term with MM, which will decrease over time as it must to preserve our global resources. Human health, the environment and animal welfare. Don't you just love doing the most good with the least effort?

And speaking of the least effort, you're probably thinking this is pretty late in the day to be sending out a recipe for a Monday. Honestly, I hope you weren't sitting around your kitchen waiting for this to arrive before you started cooking? Whew! That's a relief. Because today's recipe is a make ahead intended for one to freeze and reheat as a quick, meatless breakfast option. I think I know what's for breakfast a week from today.
